Good Wine And Steak

Wine For the rest of us

Many of us love wine, but lack the bag to allow the face, "good" wines. Moreover, I discovered that if I want to enjoy wine regularly (as I), which can not even pay $ 15 a bottle that is mounted rapidly in the monthly budget of age. But fear not, budget oenophiles, fine wines, including wines are available on a shoe string. Many people have discovered the charms of mackerel and two-buck Chuck (Charles Taylor) wines, to the point of these good wines that are virtually ubiquitous at dinner tables everywhere. But did you know, or realize that there are many, many varieties quality available through a number of other vineyards. In fact, there are dozens of wines at half the price of Yellow Tail, which produce an air of sophistication, and are a match more akin to most meals.

Silver Sands is a South African vineyard singular note. I have not tried all its varieties, but with a meal grilled dish grilled in garlic sauce, and sides of asparagus and sweet ginger, I found the Silver Sands Shiraz was one, not even a good partner for food, easy to compete with wines from a value of two or three times the cost of $ 5 per bottle. It's the smoke and oak tones contrasting deliciously with the fruitiness natural blackberry Syrah grape, which is Shiraz. There is an initial bite of this Shiraz, not unpleasant, but to attract attention, they mature on the palate in waves of black smoke not unlike a fine single malt, then a higher, more subtle tones, wood and earth, all overlaid with the fruitiness of Shiraz. This wine surprisingly nuanced, with a pleasant and promising nose and a rich, full body.

More importantly, this wine is a delicious addition to food, dancing away the language of the powerful marinade, garlic, salt meat and prepare it for the ginger and sweet spices of autumn. Or like a perfect counterpoint to the sweetness of butter, steamed asparagus and a reminder of the richness of red meat to come. This could be a bit strong as a companion for some pasta, but I can see to be proud with well-prepared steak or a burger with blue cheese deliciously rare, collapses on top and slices of bacon. You need some starch to this test for balance: maybe unsalted fries with malt vinegar pub, or maybe a monstrous baked potato smothered in butter, sour cream, bacon, cheese and broccoli florets Vermont cheddar, or like I had, ginger sweet potatoes. But I think you will find that this wine is zippy enough to sustain itself very well next to a large number of entries.

This wine was really a surprise. I am very familiar with the Reds in South Africa, and have found that are somewhat stratified, ie cheap are cheap for a reason. But not so with the Silver Sands. This is absolutely delicious Shiraz, ripe and flavorful, but not bombastic or heavy. I will definitely keep my eyes out of this delicacy of South Africa in the future, and $ 5 a bottle, I know that will not break the bank if you bring home.

Happy hunting.
