The sweet white wine spectrum?
I have recently begun to enjoy the white wine in the local martini bar, and I'm trying to learn some principles basic level of sweetness. I know I love a good Riesling, I've been told is one of the more sweet white wines. I know that the spectrum ranges from very dry very sweet, and I prefer sweet whites. Could someone give me an easy to remember guide to buying and managing the white wines? Possibly the list of the types of wines common targets of drier than sweet? That would be a great help! It is possible that even an identical spectrum of the list for red wines as well, since I have thought try those soon. Thanks!
Dear Joe, You are asking a high order. There are too many grapes and wines to the list on a spectrum from dry to sweet. However, I I will list a few to give you an idea, along with its typical flavor: Chardonnay: butter, melon, apple, pineapple, vanilla (if oaked, ie vinified aging in new barrels). Chardonnay can be dry or sweet. fruit depending on the content and duration of the harvest period. * Chenin Blanc: wet wood, wax honey bees, apple, almond. Gerwurztraminer *: rose petals, lychee, spice. It tends to be sweet. * Marsanne: Almond, honeysuckle, marzipan. Meursault *: full-bodied, dry, oak. * Riesling: Citrus fruits, petrol, honey. It tends to be sweet. * Sauvignon Blanc: Gooseberry, asparagus. It tends to be dry. * Semillon: honey, orange, lime. It tends to be sweet. * Viognier: peach, pear, nutmeg, apricot. Well, here's a short list. If you want to focus on the sweet white wines there are some listed above. In general, white wines should be served cold about 45 degrees to keep the flavor. The amount of sweetness in a wine is based on amount of sugar in the grapes before harvest. The sugar content is known as the Brix level. The higher the Brix level, the sweeter the wine and more higher the alcohol content, and that about 55% of all the sugar converts to alcohol in the fermentation process. I would recommend these wines to taste sweets if you have not already: Gewürztraminer: A wine of Germany with a sweet and crunchy. Muscato: a delicious sweet wine served cold. Muscato can be served alone or with desserts. Late Harvest Riesling: This wine is sweet, delicious flavor, and some describe it as Nectar of the Gods. Sauternes: Top French dessert wines. Usually very sweet and viscous in texture. The only way to learn about wines is to try them. If you visit the winery or a wine bar or try a wine tasting at your local store, you will learn about wine and are dry in comparison to sweet. Ultimately, is your palate decide the best wines. The more you read about and tasting wines, the greater will be fascinated by the different varieties and tastes. I hope this was helpful for you. Doctor K
